📰 Valley News

🛬 The “Freedom Plane” Lands in Van Nuys TODAY - With the Real Declaration of Independence on Board

A Boeing 737 carrying seven original founding-era U.S. documents — including an original engraved Declaration of Independence, the Treaty of Paris, and oaths of allegiance signed by George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, and Aaron Burr — is scheduled to touch down at Van Nuys Airport just before noon today. It’s the SoCal stop of a National Archives tour marking America’s 250th birthday, and somehow the Valley got picked over LAX. Big W for the 818.

🔥 What’s happening:
✈️ The Freedom Plane arrives at Van Nuys Airport Monday with a welcome ceremony on the tarmac
📜 Rare originals on board: Declaration of Independence engraving, Treaty of Paris, founding-era oaths
🇺🇸 Part of an eight-city national tour for the 250th anniversary (the “Semiquincentennial”)
🔎 Public viewing details are being coordinated with LA partners — watch NNN for the viewing location and hours

📍 Why it matters locally:
Van Nuys Airport almost never makes national “this is happening HERE” news. A literal Declaration of Independence touching down on the 818 side of the hill is the kind of moment that reminds us the Valley is still one of America’s most important civic neighborhoods. If you can swing it, this is a once-in-a-generation chance.

NNN Take:
The Valley’s in its main-character era. First it’s the Olympics handing Sepulveda Basin multiple venues, now it’s the National Archives delivering America’s birth certificate to Van Nuys. We love this for us.

🚨 Knife-Wielding Man Threatens Diners at Van Nuys Norms

🍽️ Late-Night Scare at a Valley Staple

A tense situation unfolded at a Norms restaurant in Van Nuys after a man armed with a knife reportedly threatened customers inside the popular late-night diner.

The incident happened over the weekend, sending diners and staff into a panic before police arrived and took the suspect into custody.

⚠️ What Happened

🔪 Man entered Norms allegedly holding a knife
😨 Customers inside were threatened, creating a chaotic scene
🚓 LAPD responded quickly and detained the suspect
🛑 No serious injuries reported

Authorities have not released full details yet on what led up to the incident, but the situation was contained without major harm.

📍 Why It Matters for the Valley

Norms isn’t just another restaurant — it’s one of those go-to, always-open Valley spots. Incidents like this hit different because:

👉 It’s a place families, night workers, and locals rely on
👉 It reminds everyone how quickly routine can turn unpredictable
👉 It reinforces the need to stay aware — even in familiar places

🧠 NNN Take

This is the kind of story that doesn’t always make major headlines — but it’s exactly what people in the Valley want (and need) to know.

No injuries is the best possible outcome here — but it’s a reminder:

Situational awareness matters, even during something as normal as grabbing a late-night meal.

🚫 4 Valley Homes Burglarized in 24 Hours — One House Hit Twice

LAPD is investigating four home burglaries that hit the San Fernando Valley across a single 24-hour window this past weekend, with one house on Davana Terrace in Sherman Oaks targeted Friday and Saturday night. Thieves got away with about $100,000 in jewelry from one residence. One resident was injured confronting a burglar inside their home.

🔥 What’s happening:
🏠 Four residential break-ins across the SFV within 24 hours (Fri night–Sat night)
📍 One of the hit homes: Sylmar Ave, Sherman Oaks — around 1 a.m. Saturday
💰 $100K+ in jewelry reported stolen from one home
🚫 LAPD hasn’t confirmed the incidents are connected, but the pattern is concerning

📍 Why it matters locally:
The SFV burglary crews we’ve been flagging for months are still active, still mobile, and still targeting neighborhoods on the south side of the hill — which means Northridge, Encino, and Tarzana are plausible next targets. Lock your side gates. Check your doorbell cams. Don’t post vacation photos in real time.

NNN Take:
Community-run camera networks (Ring, Nextdoor tips, neighborhood Facebook groups) have been the single most effective tool for catching these crews. If you see something weird, post it.

📚 The Granada Hills Library Is Open Again — After 2 Months Dark

The Granada Hills Branch Library has been closed since February 9 for facility repairs, and per the official notice from Granada Hills North NC, the closure was set to end April 12 — which means the doors should be swinging open again this week. Parents running out of quiet homework spots can finally exhale.

🔥 What’s happening:
⛔ Branch was closed Feb 9 through April 12 for facility repairs
📍 Located in the heart of Granada Hills — an anchor for families and students
Holds that migrated to Northridge and Porter Ranch should be returnable here again

📍 Why it matters locally:
Library branches are one of the last free, air-conditioned, no-purchase-required third places in the Valley. Losing one for two months hit hard — especially for seniors and after-school kids. Getting it back is a real win.

NNN Take:
We’ll take any good news about Valley public amenities right now. Go check out a book this week just to say thanks.

🏊 CSUN Sports

🎾 CSUN Women’s Tennis Wins 4 Straight — UC San Diego Falls 5–2

The Matadors’ women’s tennis team is heating up at exactly the right time. CSUN knocked off UC San Diego 5–2 on Sunday for their fourth straight win, following the 4–3 thriller over Long Beach State on April 10. The team is stringing together the kind of late-season form that makes Big West tournament seeding very interesting.

🔥 What’s happening:
🎾 CSUN 5, UC San Diego 2 — April 12, 2026
🔥 Fourth consecutive win, capping a strong April run
📈 Momentum building right as the Big West tournament chase tightens

📍 Why it matters locally:
CSUN Women’s Tennis is quietly one of the most consistent programs on campus — and the fans who make it to their matches at the CSUN Tennis Complex get some of the best up-close college sports in the Valley. If you’ve never been, now’s the time.
